Dr. McKernan has been trained as a pharmacist, naturopathic physician and osteopathic physician and is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians. Dr. McKernan joined Sam Houston State University in January 2017 as the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in the College of Osteopathic Medicine.
Dr. McKernan attended medical school at Nova-Southeastern University, College of Osteopathic Medicine in Florida. He completed his residency in Modesto, CA and, after residency, practiced in a rural community in the central San Joaquin Valley. He began his academic medicine career in 2000 at the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, a rural medical school in Missouri. He joined the faculty at the Conroe Family Medicine Residency Program in 2003 and from 2006 – 2016 served as the Program Director for the Residency and CEO for the Lone Star Family Health Center.
Dr. McKernan practices family medicine and cares for children and adults of all ages. He includes osteopathic manipulative medicine in his practice. His interests include music, the Astros and spending time at the beach.
