Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine
Relief That Starts With a Gentle Touch
Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) is a hands-on treatment that supports your body’s natural ability to heal. Using gentle movements and stretches, our doctors help the body heal, restore balance and improve movement by focusing on how the body’s systems work together for better health.
This approach is part of the whole-body care offered by Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine. At SHSU Physicians, our team takes the time to understand your needs, explain your options, and deliver care that fits your life. Whether you're recovering from an injury, managing chronic pain, or dealing with everyday discomfort, we’re here to help you feel better and move more freely.
A Hands-On Approach to Healing
Osteopathic manipulative medicine is a specialty that focuses on correcting structural imbalances in the body.
Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is a hands-on method used by doctors of osteopathy to treat many health problems. It involves gently moving and stretching the muscles, joints and soft tissues to reduce pain and help the body heal naturally.
OMT is not massage or chiropractic care – it is a medically trained, physician-led treatment that is part of whole-body care from a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine.
-
How OMT Works
OMT uses gentle pressure to move different parts of the body, helping to align the spine and joints. By working on muscles, soft tissues, tendons, and ligaments, an osteopathic manipulative medicine specialist stimulates the body’s natural healing abilities. This process promotes better blood flow, relaxes muscles, and helps the body release its own pain-relieving hormones. OMT is effective for treating various types of pain and discomfort.
-
Benefits of OMT
OMT can help with many different health issues, such as:
- Pain Relief: Helps reduce pain, swelling, and stiffness, especially in muscles and joints.
- Better Movement: Increases flexibility and range of motion in joints and muscles.
- Improved Circulation: Helps improve blood flow and speeds up healing.
- Prevention & Recovery: Helps prevent future health problems and speeds up recovery from injury or surgery.
- Non-Invasive: Helps avoid the need for medications, surgeries, or other treatments.
-
Conditions OMT Can Treat
OMT can treat a wide range of problems, including:
- Back, neck, and joint pain, plus carpal tunnel syndrome
- Migraines, headaches, and chronic pain
- Breathing problems
- Digestive issues
- Muscle and tendon injuries
- Pregnancy discomfort
- Stress-related tension or fatigue
- Arthritis, fibromyalgia, and more.
-
Whole-Body Approach
We understand that your health includes more than physical symptoms. We’re here to support your emotional and mental well-being, too.

Know Before You Go
DURING YOUR SESSION
History
When you come in for Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT), your doctor will start by asking about your health history. They’ll want to know about any past illnesses, surgeries, injuries and medications you’re taking.
Symptoms
Next, your doctor will ask about your symptoms, including how severe they are, how long you’ve had them, and what makes them better or worse.
Health
OMT takes a whole-body approach, not just focusing on one area. Your doctor will ask about your habits, like your diet, exercise, sleep, and stress levels. This information helps create a treatment plan that fits your lifestyle and addresses your body as a whole.
Exam
Your doctor will then perform a physical exam, assessing your posture, balance and flexibility. They may apply gentle pressure to certain muscles and joints to identify areas of tension or misalignment. In some cases, they may recommend diagnostic imaging like X-rays or MRIs to help guide your treatment plan.
By looking at all of these factors, your doctor can provide the best care to help you feel better and stay healthy, not just treat symptoms.
AFTER YOUR TREATMENT
Following your OMT sessions, it’s important to drink plenty of water. Light activity, such as walking, can help ease stiffness, but avoid intense exercise for at least 24 hours. Most patients can resume normal activities within one or two days but listen to your body and rest as needed.
